Remote Work vs Office Work: What Actually Works for Nigerians?
When the world shut down in 2020, millions of people suddenly found themselves working from home. Meetings moved to Zoom, offices became bedrooms, and remote work quickly became the future everyone was talking about.
Six years later, the excitement has settled, and reality has kicked in.
For many Nigerians, the conversation is no longer about which work style is better. It's about which one actually works.
The year was 2020, and almost every part of life moved online.
Companies that had never considered remote work suddenly had no choice. Employees learnt how to work from home, businesses invested in digital tools, and for a while, it looked like office work might become a thing of the past.
It didn't.
Today, most Nigerians still work from an office.
Current estimates suggest roughly 53% to 55% of workers remain fully on-site, about 30% work under hybrid arrangements, while only 14% to 17% work fully remotely. Remote work is growing, but it is still concentrated in technology, media, consulting, customer support, and other digital-first industries.
One reason is simple.
Nigeria's infrastructure hasn't caught up.
Stable electricity is still a luxury in many areas. Internet costs remain high, and unreliable broadband can turn a simple one-hour meeting into a frustrating experience. Working remotely sounds great until PHCN takes light in the middle of an important client presentation.
Ironically, remote work has also created opportunities that never existed before.
A software developer in Enugu can now work for a company in Canada. A virtual assistant in Ibadan can support businesses in the UK. Designers, writers, video editors, accountants, customer support agents, and marketers now compete in a global talent market without leaving Nigeria.
For many young professionals, remote work has become more than flexibility.
It's become access.
But flexibility comes with its own challenges.
Many remote workers struggle to separate work from personal life. Your office is your bedroom. Your laptop never really closes. Working hours quietly become longer because clients and employers assume you're always available. Studies also show that loneliness, isolation, and burnout remain common complaints among full-time remote workers.
There's another reality that doesn't get talked about enough.
Nigeria still has no single law dedicated to remote work.
Instead, employment relationships rely on existing labour laws, employment contracts, and general legal principles. While these laws still protect workers, many remote employees and freelancers continue to complain about delayed payments, changing project scopes, and employers refusing to honour agreements after work has already been delivered.
That's why contracts matter more than ever.
Whether you're working remotely for a Nigerian company or an international client, clear agreements on payment, deadlines, ownership of work, notice periods, and dispute resolution are no longer optional. They're part of protecting your career.
The truth is, there isn't one perfect answer.
Some people thrive in an office where collaboration happens naturally. Others produce their best work from home without spending four hours every day in Lagos traffic.
The smartest companies are beginning to realise this too.
