🎙️ Episode 076 | The Importance of Teaching Children to Pray | Train up a Child Parenting Podcast
Monday | Day 1 | Week 12
THIS WEEK’S THEME: Helping Your Child Develop a Personal Prayer Life
TODAY'S TOPIC: The Importance of Teaching Children to Pray
Prayer is one of the most important spiritual habits we can teach our children.
Teaching a child to pray is more than teaching them words to recite before meals or bedtime. It is helping them understand that they can personally talk to God, trust Him, seek His help, thank Him, and bring their concerns before Him.
WHY SHOULD WE TEACH CHILDREN TO PRAY?
1. Prayer helps children develop a relationship with God.
Children need to know God personally, not only hear about Him from their parents or teachers.
2. Prayer teaches dependence on God.
When children learn to pray about their needs, fears, decisions, and challenges, they learn that they can depend on God.
3. Prayer builds faith.
As children pray and learn to trust God, they begin to understand that God hears them and that they can confidently depend on Him.
4. Prayer teaches gratitude.
Prayer gives children an opportunity to thank God for their family, friends, education, provision, protection, and other blessings.
5. Prayer helps children bring their feelings to God.
When a child is worried, afraid, disappointed, or confused, prayer teaches them that they can talk to God about how they feel.
GUIDING SCRIPTURE
1 Thessalonians 5:17 — “Pray without ceasing.”
Prayer should not be something we teach our children to do only when there is a problem. We should help them develop prayer as a consistent part of their daily relationship with God.
A SIMPLE START FOR PARENTS
Start simple:
• Pray with your children.
• Let them hear you pray.
• Encourage them to pray in their own words.
• Teach them to thank God.
• Encourage them to pray for others.
• Help them understand that they can talk to God about everyday matters.
Remember, our goal is not merely to raise children who know how to recite prayers, but children who know how to seek God.
PARENTS, REFLECT
Ask yourself:
Does my child see prayer as a real part of my relationship with God?
Our children learn not only from what we teach them, but also from what they consistently see us practise.
LET’S PRAY
Heavenly Father, help us teach our children to know You, trust You, and seek You through prayer. Help us to model a consistent prayer life before them and give us wisdom to guide them as they develop their own personal relationship with You. In Jesus Name. Amen.
