THIS WEEK’S THEME: Teaching Children to Love and Obey God
TODAY'S TOPIC: The Role of Parents in Modelling Love and Obedience to God
Hello, dear parents,
Welcome to today’s episode of the Train up a Child Parenting Podcast. I am Pastor August, your daily parenting podcast host.
This week, we are focusing on Teaching Children to Love and Obey God—helping them develop a heart that truly follows Him. Today, we will explore The Role of Parents in Modelling Love and Obedience to God and how our example significantly impacts our children’s faith journey.
TODAY’S OUTLINE
Here’s what we’ll cover in today’s episode:
1. Why Parental Example Matters – Understanding how children learn about God by watching their parents.
2. Guiding Scripture for the Day – A verse that highlights the power of leading by example.
3. Practical Ways to Model Love and Obedience to God – How parents can show their faith through daily actions.
4. Activity: Family Faith Challenge – A simple way to encourage consistent faith-based habits at home.
5. Reflection Time for Parents – Evaluating how our lives reflect obedience to God.
6. Let’s Have a Word of Prayer – Asking for God’s wisdom in being godly role models.
7. Looking Ahead – A preview of tomorrow’s topic.
8. Closing Blessing – Encouragement to keep nurturing faith in our children.
WHY PARENTAL EXAMPLE MATTERS
Children learn more from what they see than what they hear. If we want them to love and obey God, they must first see us doing the same. As parents, our actions, words, and attitudes shape their understanding of faith.
When we prioritise prayer, Bible reading, and obedience to God’s commands, we teach our children that loving God is more than just words—it’s a way of life. Conversely, if they see us being inconsistent in our faith, they may struggle to take God seriously.
By modelling love and obedience to God, we:
1. Show them that faith is real and practical, not just a Sunday activity.
2. Help them develop a personal relationship with God.
3. Reinforce that obedience to God brings blessings and guidance.
4. Create a family culture that honours God in daily life.
GUIDING SCRIPTURE FOR THE DAY
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 – “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
This passage reminds us that teaching our children about God isn’t a one-time lesson—it’s an ongoing process that happens in everyday life.
PRACTICAL WAYS TO MODEL LOVE AND OBEDIENCE TO GOD
Here are some ways we can demonstrate our faith so our children can follow our example:
1. Be Consistent in Your Walk with God – Pray regularly, read the Bible, and live according to His Word. Let your children see your commitment.
2. Worship Together as a Family – Attend church, sing worship songs, and study the Bible together.
3. Obey God’s Word in Daily Life – Show kindness, honesty, and forgiveness in your interactions.
4. Talk About God Naturally – Make faith a part of your everyday conversations. Discuss how God is working in your life.
5. Demonstrate Trust in God – In difficult situations, show your children that you trust God instead of responding with fear or frustration.
ACTIVITY: FAMILY FAITH CHALLENGE
What You’ll Need: A notebook or a whiteboard
How It Works:
1. Each family member sets a faith-based goal for the week (e.g., praying every morning, reading a Bible verse daily, or showing kindness to a sibling).
2. Write down the goals where everyone can see them.
3. At the end of the week, discuss what was learned and celebrate each person’s efforts.
This simple activity helps make faith an intentional part of daily family life.
REFLECTION TIME FOR PARENTS
Consider these questions:
1. Do my actions reflect my love and obedience to God?
2. Am I leading my children to God through my daily example?
3. How can I improve in demonstrating my faith at home?
Let’s ask God for the wisdom and strength to be the role models our children need.
LET’S HAVE A WORD OF PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for entrusting us with the responsibility of raising our children in Your ways. Help us to be faithful examples of love and obedience. Let our lives reflect Your truth, so our children may follow You with their whole hearts. Give us grace to walk in faith daily. In Jesus Name, we pray. Amen.
LOOKING AHEAD
Tomorrow, we will discuss Helping Children Develop a Heart for God’s Word—practical ways to instil a love for Scripture in their lives. Stay tuned!
CLOSING BLESSING
Thank you for joining today’s episode of the Train up a Child Parenting Podcast. May God strengthen you as you model His love and obedience in your home.
