THIS WEEK’S THEME: Teaching Children to Love and Obey God
TODAY'S TOPIC: Teaching Children to Follow God’s Commands with Joy
Hello, dear parents,
Welcome to today’s episode of the Train up a Child Parenting Podcast. I am Pastor August, your daily parenting podcast host.
This week, we are focusing on Teaching Children to Love and Obey God—helping them understand that true love for God is demonstrated through obedience and devotion. Today, we will explore how to encourage our children to follow God’s commands with joy, rather than seeing them as burdensome rules.

3. Practical Ways to Instil Joyful Obedience – Encouraging children to delight in following God’s ways.
4. Activity: Obedience Treasure Hunt – A fun and engaging way to teach children the rewards of obedience.
5. Reflection Time for Parents – Assessing how we model joyful obedience in our own lives.
6. Let’s Have a Word of Prayer – Seeking God’s wisdom in raising children who obey Him with joy.
7. Looking Ahead – A preview of tomorrow’s topic.
8. Closing Blessing – Encouragement to nurture joyful obedience in our children.
WHY JOYFUL OBEDIENCE MATTERS
Obedience to God should not feel like a burden but a joyful response to His love. When children understand that God’s commands are for their good, they will embrace them with excitement rather than reluctance. Teaching children to obey God with joy:
Helps them develop a positive relationship with Him.
Encourages a heart of gratitude and trust in God’s wisdom.
Strengthens their faith as they experience the blessings of obedience.
Children who learn to obey joyfully will grow into adults who delight in following God’s will, even in challenging times.
GUIDING SCRIPTURE FOR THE DAY
Psalm 119:14 – “I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.”
This verse reminds us that God’s Word is not a set of restrictions but a treasure that brings joy and fulfilment.
PRACTICAL WAYS TO INSTIL JOYFUL OBEDIENCE
Here are some simple ways to help children embrace God’s commands with joy:
1. Teach the “Why” Behind God’s Commands – Explain that God’s rules are for their protection and happiness, just as loving parents set rules for their safety.
2. Celebrate Small Acts of Obedience – Praise children when they follow God’s Word, showing them that obedience brings joy.
3. Make Learning Fun – Use songs, games, and creative storytelling to make biblical principles engaging.
4. Share Testimonies – Tell stories of people in the Bible (like Daniel or David) who experienced blessings through obedience.
5. Model Joyful Obedience – Show excitement when obeying God’s Word so your children learn by example.
ACTIVITY: OBEDIENCE TREASURE HUNT
What You’ll Need:
A small prize (stickers, a treat, or a special privilege)
A list of simple, age-appropriate tasks that align with biblical principles (e.g., “Help a sibling,” “Say something kind,” “Pray before meals”)
How It Works:
1. Write each task on a small piece of paper and hide them around the house.
2. Encourage your child to find and complete the tasks.
3. Each time they obey with a joyful heart, they receive a clue leading to the final “treasure.”
4. At the end, discuss how obedience leads to rewards—not just in a game, but in real life with God.
This activity reinforces that obedience is not about strict rules but about discovering the blessings God has for us.
REFLECTION TIME FOR PARENTS
Consider these questions:
1. Do I demonstrate joy when following God’s Word, or do I make it seem like an obligation?
2. How do I react when my child obeys with a good attitude?
3. What changes can I make to help my child see obedience as a blessing rather than a burden?
As parents, our attitude towards obedience shapes how our children perceive God’s commands.
LET’S HAVE A WORD OF PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word, which guides us in truth and love. Help us to teach our children that obedience to You is a joyful experience, not a heavy burden. May we, as parents, model a heart of delight in following You so our children will do the same. Give us wisdom and patience as we nurture their faith. In Jesus Name, we pray. Amen.
LOOKING AHEAD
Tomorrow, we will explore The Role of Parents in Modelling Love and Obedience to God—how our example shapes our children’s faith journey. Stay tuned!
