Before building multi billion dollar enterprises across energy, power, and banking, Femi Otedola had a start in life that looked nothing like a future billionaire. Beginning his primary education at the University of Lagos Staff School in 1968 alongside Kola Abiola, young Otedola struggled constantly. He finished at the bottom of his class every term and even had to repeat a grade before graduating primary school in 1974. Shifts to Methodist Boys High School in Lagos and later Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo did not change his academic trajectory. Despite his parents hoping that a boarding school environment would spark a turnaround, schoolwork, homework, and math theorems simply held zero interest for him.
The real turning point arrived when his father, Sir Michael Otedola, launched a printing business named Impact Press in Surulere, Lagos. The rumble of the printing machinery and the sight of blank paper transforming into finished products fascinated Otedola far more than any classroom lecture. Ignoring his mother's tears and objections, he abandoned his A Level studies before finishing Lower Sixth and threw himself directly into his father's company.
Starting from the bottom, Otedola learned shorthand, mastered typing, and took charge of preparing all company letters and business correspondence. But learning the family trade was only the beginning. Wanting true independence, he proposed working as an independent sales consultant for Impact Press on a ten to fifteen percent commission. His father agreed.
Instead of waiting for walk in customers, Otedola invested his own earnings into marketing, aggressively pitching major advertising agencies and corporate clients across Lagos. His sales drive won major accounts that put Impact Press into head to head competition with industry giants like Academy Press. By age twenty five in 1987, he had risen to managing director of the company.
When his father later entered politics in the early 1990s, Otedola used his saved commissions and experience to step out on his own. In 1994, he launched Centre Force Limited with ten million naira in capital, paving the way for his bold entry into oil trading through Centre Energy, which later evolved into Forte Oil and established him as a dominant force in African enterprise. Otedola's story stands as a clear lesson that early academic struggles do not define your ceiling when you have practical execution, sales grit, and relentless focus.
