Nollywood Produces More Than Ever. Why Are Fewer Characters Unforgettable?

Nollywood's output and production polish have grown, but many viewers still remember yesterday's characters more clearly than today's bigger-budget releases. Photo: Bestvillage / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0. Cropped.
Mention old Nollywood and people rarely remember only a plot. They remember characters.

They remember the uncle whose presence announced trouble, the mother-in-law who controlled every room, the friend whose advice could destroy a marriage, the village elder with a proverb for every crisis. Even when production quality was rough, the people on screen felt specific.

Nollywood now has better cameras, cleaner sound, larger budgets, international premieres and global streaming distribution. There is more content than one person can follow. Yet many viewers still ask the uncomfortable question: why do so few new characters remain in public memory?

Nostalgia explains part of it. People naturally attach meaning to films they watched with family or during formative years. We also compare the best films from an earlier era with every ordinary release today.

But nostalgia does not explain everything.

The economics of modern production rewards speed. Streaming platforms and YouTube channels need a constant supply of new titles. Producers work with tight schedules. Writers may have little time for research, rewriting or developing character histories that never appear directly on screen.

The result is often a familiar set of functions rather than fully formed people: the rich husband, the ambitious woman, the wicked relative, the comic friend, the traditional parent. They move the plot, but they do not always surprise us.

Older Nollywood frequently repeated types too. Its advantage was that strong performers, longer scenes and culturally grounded dialogue sometimes turned those types into personalities. A character could be funny, frightening and vulnerable in the same film. Their language revealed where they came from and how they understood the world.

Visual polish cannot replace that interior life.

Memorable characters usually want something concrete, fear something specific and make choices that carry a cost. They have contradictions. A generous person can be controlling. A villain can love their child. A modern professional can still be ruled by an old superstition. These tensions make audiences debate a character after the credits.

The industry also needs better preservation. Interviews with veteran actors and writers, annotated scripts, production histories and oral accounts of famous roles should not vanish with the people who made them. Today's creators could learn a great deal from how memorable scenes were developed under severe limitations.

This is not an argument for returning to poor sound or endless films split into four parts. Nollywood should keep its technical progress. The opportunity is to combine that progress with deeper writing, regional voices and characters who could only have come from a particular Nigerian world.

Which recent Nollywood character do you believe people will still quote twenty years from now—and why?
