Can a Government-Approved App Really Save Detty December?
The Ministry of Culture's 100-Day Festival Calendar aims to tax and regulate our festive season via MyCityApp. Critics say centralizing events will choke creative freedom while basic infrastructure like power, fuel, and security remain unfixed.
The Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy is trying to centralize and monetize Nigeria’s festive season via a 100-Day Festival Calendar. Critics argue that taxing and regulating through platforms like MyCityApp will choke the creative freedom that makes our lifestyle scene thrive.
The federal government’s newly launched September-to-December 100-Day Festival Calendar is a bold attempt to commercialize Nigeria’s massive end-of-year festive boom. By partnering with digital platforms like MyCityApp and MyLagosApp, the state wants to bring every concert, cultural exhibition, and beach party under a single, centralized digital radar.
Minister Hannatu Musawa asserts that this structured approach is the key to unlocking an ambitious $100 billion tourism economy. While a unified events registry looks great on paper for international tourists and returning diaspora, the heavy hand of state centralization threatens to transform a highly spontaneous, grassroots entertainment industry into a heavily policed corporate environment.Beneath the flashy promises of global visibility lies the inevitable machinery of state regulation, licensing fees, and new tax burdens.
The creative industry in Lagos, Abuja, and other major hubs has historically boomed precisely because it operates free from slow bureaucratic bottlenecks. Forcing local event organizers, independent artists, and nightlife vendors to route their ticket sales and promotions through government-approved software opens the floodgates for aggressive enforcement permits. Instead of actually supporting local talent, this push feels like a strategic avenue for the state to levy extra fees on an economic sector that built itself from scratch without public funding.
The timing of this centralized festival push has also sparked sharp criticism across the country. As citizens navigate unprecedented inflation, the complex fallout of fuel subsidy removals, and a chronically unstable national electricity grid, the government's priorities seem radically misplaced. Critics are openly questioning the decision to allocate state resources, reactivate investment councils, and deploy presidential task forces to coordinate "Detty December" beach parties and musical concerts.
If the ministry truly wants to build a sustainable, world-class tourism ecosystem, it must fix foundational issues like nationwide security, reliable transport corridors, and basic hospitality infrastructure before attempting to monetize the lifestyle surface.
