New Tax Laws is here — Implementation Starts Jan 1, 2026

Nigeria has signed four major tax reform bills into law, and the government has repeatedly confirmed that they will take effect from January 1, 2026 as planned — despite some rumors or public confusion about delays or changes.

The new laws include:

Nigeria Tax (Fair Taxation) Act

Nigeria Tax Administration Act

Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act

Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act

These collectively overhaul the tax system, simplify tax administration, and replace older fragmented rules.

What’s Likely to Change for Individuals

Huge tax relief for low-income earners: People earning below roughly ₦800,000 per year will pay zero personal income tax under the new rules.

Many common household expenses (like essentials) are expected to be exempt from VAT — which could help reduce prices on food, healthcare, and transport.

There’s an ongoing effort to unify tax ID systems so everyone has one Taxpayer Identification Number (linked to NIN).

Small firms under ₦100 m in annual turnover and ₦250 m in assets are exempted from corporate tax.

Larger companies may see changes to rates and requirements, including some *corporate tax adjustments and top-up thresholds.

Enforcement & Penalties

The new Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) — replacing the old Federal Inland Revenue Service — now has the authority to enforce tax compliance more strictly, including fines up to ₦10 million and possible jail terms for serious breaches (like failing to register, file returns, or disclose basic information).

Government Position

President Tinubu and officials insist these changes are meant to reset and modernize the tax system, not just raise taxes — and that most Nigerians, especially low-income earners and small businesses, will benefit or pay less than under the old system.

What’s NOT Happening (So Far)

There’s no immediate implementation of a 5 % fuel tax even though it was mentioned in earlier drafts — government says it’s not going to be introduced right now.
