The truth is, some of the most nutritious foods are already available in our local markets—and they're often more affordable.

As a Registered Dietitian, I often remind people that good nutrition isn't about expensive foods; it's about making informed choices with what you have.

Here are a few Nigerian "superfoods" you should be eating more often:

🥬 Ugu (Pumpkin Leaves): Rich in iron, folate, vitamins A and C, making it excellent for blood health and immunity.

🫘 Beans: A great source of plant protein and fibre that supports heart health, improves blood sugar control, and keeps you full for longer.

🐟 Mackerel (Titus): Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart and brain health.

🥜 Groundnuts: Provide healthy fats, protein, vitamin E, and magnesium. Enjoy them in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

🍠 Sweet Potatoes: High in fibre and beta-carotene, supporting gut health and providing sustained energy.

🥭 Pawpaw (Papaya): Rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, and digestive enzymes that support healthy digestion.

These foods may not be marketed as "superfoods," but they are nutrient-dense and can play an important role in reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases when included in a balanced diet.

Instead of chasing expensive imported foods, focus on building meals around local, affordable, and nutrient-rich options.

Healthy eating should be practical, sustainable, and accessible—not a luxury.
