You spend time together, you talk regularly, you have feelings for each other. There is physical intimacy, you care about each other or at least, it feels that way.

But there is no label, no clear direction, no conversation about what you are actually building. And every time you try to bring it up, something gets in the way.

What I’m describing has a name. It is called a situationship. And it is one of the most emotionally draining dynamics in modern dating precisely because it gives you just enough to stay, but never enough to feel fully chosen.

A situationship is not a relationship waiting to happen. It is a relationship that someone has decided consciously or not, that they do not want to fully commit to.

10 Signs You Are In a Situationship

Here are ten signs you are in one, and what to do about it.

1. There is no defined relationship status:

You have never had an explicit conversation about what you are. When it comes up, the response is always vague. You are left assuming rather than knowing.

2. You feel like a priority sometimes and an option at other times:

His availability is inconsistent.

Sometimes he is fully present, and other times you barely hear from him. You never quite know which version you are going to get.

3. You have never been introduced to anyone important in his life:

His friends do not know you. His family has no idea you exist. You occupy a private, separate corner of his life that never intersects with the rest of it.

4. The relationship only exists on his terms:

Plans happen when he initiates.

The pace is set by his availability. Your needs and preferences are accommodated, but only when it is convenient for him.

5. You cannot talk about the future:

Any conversation that moves beyond the present like, what you are we building? where this is going? what kind of future does he plan or sees for you two? he shuts down, deflects or gets uncomfortable very quickly.

6. You feel anxious more than you feel secure:

The connection does not give you peace, it gives you uncertainty.

You spend energy trying to read his behaviour, decode his messages and figure out where you stand.

7. You have made yourself smaller to keep the connection:

You have suppressed your needs, downplayed your feelings or accepted less than what you genuinely want, because asking for more feels like it might end things.

8. You are available for him but he is not always available for you:

You rearrange your schedule, respond quickly and show up consistently. The reciprocity is missing. You are investing more than what is coming back.

9. You find yourself making excuses for his behavior:

To your friends, to yourself. You have a long list of reasons why his inconsistency is understandable. Why his unavailability is temporary. Why this is worth waiting for.

10. Deep down you know something is not right:

You might dismiss this feeling. You might talk yourself out of it, but it is there. The quiet knowing that you deserve more clarity than you are getting.

Why Situationships Are So Hard To Leave

If you recognized yourself in several of those signs, you might be wondering why you have not left already. The answer is not weakness, it’s chemistry.

Situationships create a specific kind of emotional intensity through the push-pull dynamic. The highs feel very high. The uncertainty keeps your nervous system activated, and your brain which is wired to value things you have worked for, attaches more deeply to something uncertain than to something stable.

It is not love, it’s anxiety operating in love's costume.

What To Do If You Are In a Situationship

Step 1: Get honest with yourself.

Stop calling it complicated.

Stop calling it timing. Look at the pattern and not the potential. Is this person choosing you clearly, consistently and without you having to beg for it? If the answer is no, you have your information.

Step 2: Have the clarity conversation. Not a fight, not an ultimatum delivered in frustration. A calm, honest, clear conversation. Something like: “I enjoy what we have and I want something real and intentional. Is that what we are building?”

Then listen to his answer. Not just his words, but his actions in the weeks that follow.

Step 3: Act on what he tells you.

If he is vague, vagueness is an answer. If he says he is not ready, not ready is an answer. The mistake most women make is treating these responses as temporary obstacles rather than as genuine information about where he’s heart is right now.

You do not need to force someone to commit, you need to decide what you will and will not accept, and then hold it.

Step 4: Choose yourself.

Leaving a situationship is one of the hardest things to do when feelings are involved. But staying in one is slowly eroding your standard for what love is supposed to look like. Every day you stay, is a day you are not available for someone who would choose you fully and clearly.
