Shopping in the market or supermarket in Nigeria depends on what you are trying to buy that day.

When I don’t feel like walking around or arguing about price, I just go to the supermarket for basic things. I just pick and put it in my cart. no stress, no “how much last?”, no standing under the sun. But once you are inside, you already know two things: you can’t bargain for anything, and sometimes you won’t even find everything you need in one place.

The open market is the opposite.

If you go places like Mile 12 or Oyigbo, you already know you are not just going to “shop”, you are going to move around. You will compare prices from one seller to another, you will hear different prices for the same thing, and you will definitely bargain. That is where you actually get better value for money most times.

But the effort is real. You will walk. You will carry bags. You will stand in the heat. Sometimes, the crowd alone can drain you before you even finish buying what you came for. And depending on the time, it can feel loud, rushed, and tiring.

The supermarket is easier for speed and comfort. The market is better for price and variety.

So if I want things quickly and calmly, I go to the supermarket. If I want more value and I don’t mind stress, I go to the market.

And honestly, it depends. If money is tight, the market suddenly makes sense. If I’m tired or just don’t want noise, the supermarket becomes the only option.
