There was a season in ministry when the pain got so heavy, I didn't think I'd make it through.

I don't say that lightly. As a young pastor, disappointment and failure cut so deep that I reached a point of real despair. In that moment, all I could see was shame. I couldn't see past it.

I share that today because of something I've come to understand: the thing you're most tempted to hide might be the exact thing someone else needs to hear.

What almost broke me became what I now use to help others

Looking back, that season taught me humility, resilience, and a kind of compassion I didn't have before. It gave me the ability to sit with people in their darkest moments and actually understand — not just sympathize, but understand. Today, I walk young ministers through struggles I once thought would finish me.

That's the thing about experience. It's not theory. It's not something you read in a book and repeat. It's knowledge lived — earned in seasons of joy, pain, opportunity, and loss. And every single one of us is carrying some version of it.

You don't need a title to be someone's guide

Ask yourself honestly: if you needed real guidance, would you rather learn from someone who studied a thing, or someone who lived it?

A mother understands motherhood in a way no article can teach. Someone who has walked out of addiction can reach another person still trapped in it in ways statistics never will. Someone who has survived depression can say something no clinical definition ever could.

Your struggles aren't just something you got through. They're proof — for somebody else — that getting through is possible.

Don't let what you've lived through go to waste

It's easy to dismiss your own story because it feels ordinary to you. It isn't. What feels normal in your eyes might be exactly what changes someone else's life.

Somewhere out there, right now, someone is fighting a battle you've already survived. They're not looking for a perfect story. They're looking for proof that someone made it through — and you might be the only one who can give them that.

Your pain has purpose. Your victories have purpose. The question is whether you'll let them go to waste, or let them become someone else's way through.
