‎I have watched couples eat once a day and still hold hands like it was a five course meal. I have watched them share one wrapper of akara between two mouths and still laugh like billionaires. Poverty humbled them, but it did not divide them. Then money came. And the same marriage that survived hunger could not survive abundance.

‎

‎This confuses many people. They think money is a cure. They think once the struggle ends, the love automatically stabilizes. But money does not heal what poverty exposed. Money only removes the pressure that was hiding the cracks.

‎

‎Let me explain this properly, because this is deeper than finance.

‎

‎Poverty does not test love, it tests character

‎

‎When there is no money, everything is tested. Patience is tested. Loyalty is tested. Communication is tested. Most importantly, the way you treat your spouse when you have nothing to offer is tested.

‎

‎Many people manage to survive lack physically, but they fail the emotional test woven inside it. A man loses his job and his wife starts comparing him to her friend's husband. A woman is struggling to make ends meet and her husband calls her useless in front of visitors. These moments look small at the time. They are not small. They are seeds. And seeds always grow.

‎

‎Proverbs 18:21 says death and life are in the power of the tongue. People quote this verse for motivation, but it is also a warning. Whatever you speak into a person during their lowest moment becomes a memory they carry into their highest moment. You may forget what you said in anger. They will not forget how it felt.

‎

‎The wound of poverty is not always the lack, it is the treatment during the lack.

‎

‎This is the part many people miss. It is not poverty that destroys marriages later. It is what poverty revealed about how you treated your spouse.

‎

‎A man does not remember that his wife struggled financially with him. He remembers that she made him feel small while struggling. A woman does not remember that her husband could not provide much. She remembers that he humiliated her for asking, or disappeared emotionally when she needed him present.

‎

‎Struggle does not break people. Disrespect and dishonor during struggle breaks people.

‎

‎I always say this: character is not built in comfort, it is revealed in constraint. When there is no money to soften your words, your true nature shows. And whatever shows during that season becomes the foundation the marriage stands on, whether the couple realizes it or not.

‎

‎Poverty forces two people to lean on each other because there is no other option. Prosperity removes that forced dependency. Suddenly there is choice. There is comfort. There is space to think, to remember, to feel.

‎

‎And in that space, the wounds that were suppressed by survival begin to speak.

‎

‎A woman who endured disrespect while broke may endure it silently because leaving felt impossible. But once money enters, the impossible becomes possible. She is no longer trapped by lack. She now has options. And many marriages that seemed strong during poverty simply could not survive the freedom that wealth provided, because the woman or man was only staying out of necessity, not peace.

‎

‎This is why some marriages that looked solid during hardship suddenly fall apart the moment things improve. Prosperity did not cause the collapse. Prosperity only removed the pressure that was preventing the collapse from happening earlier.

‎

‎How you treat a person at their lowest is a receipt they keep forever.

‎

‎I have said this before and I will keep saying it because it needs to be said often. A man never forgets how he was treated when he had nothing. A woman never forgets the words spoken to her when she was vulnerable and broke.

‎

‎You may apologize later. You may explain that you were stressed, that life was hard, that you did not mean it. But an apology does not erase memory. It only softens the pain temporarily. The mind still keeps the receipt.

‎

‎This is why I always advise couples to guard their words and their conduct during hard seasons more than during good ones. Anyone can be loving when there is abundance. The real test of your heart is how you behave when there is nothing to show for your effort yet.

‎

‎Ecclesiastes 7:8 in the Good News translation says the end of something is better than the beginning, patience is better than pride. Many marriages collapse in prosperity because patience was absent during the poverty phase, and pride took its place instead.

‎

‎Money will never fix what disrespect has already broken.

‎

‎This is a hard truth, but someone needs to hear it plainly. Money can upgrade your house. Money can upgrade your car. Money cannot upgrade a wounded heart that has quietly decided it has had enough.

‎

‎Some people think if they just make it financially, their spouse will forget the years of insult, neglect, or humiliation. But healing does not work like that. Wounds do not disappear because comfort arrived. Wounds either get addressed, or they get buried, and buried wounds always resurface eventually, usually at the worst time.

‎

‎If you truly want your marriage to survive prosperity, you must first make sure it survived 'poverty' in a healthy way. Not just physically, but emotionally. Ask yourself honestly. Did we grow through the struggle, or did we only endure it while quietly hurting each other?

‎

‎A marriage does not collapse the day the money arrives. It collapses the day the pain that was ignored finally gets the space to speak.

‎

‎If you want a marriage that survives every season, protect your spouse's dignity more than you protect your pride. Speak life, even when you have little else to offer. Because comfort will come and go, but the way you made your partner feel when you had nothing will remain long after you have everything.

‎
