If you have ever been caught in the rain in Lagos, you know there is a difference between “it’s raining” and “this place is about to flood.”

In Ajegunle, it does not take long. Give it one or two hours of steady rain, and the streets start changing. Gutters overflow first, then the water creeps onto the road. Keke riders begin to avoid certain routes, and shop owners start lifting their goods without being told. Nobody announces it, but everyone already knows what is coming.

Lekki feels like it should be different, but it is not. You could be driving on a clear road, then suddenly hit a stretch where water has gathered badly. Around Lekki Phase 1, it is common to see cars slowing to a crawl after rainfall, trying to avoid damaging their engines. Some streets flood so often that residents already know which turns to skip once it rains.

On Victoria Island, the flooding shows up more frustratingly. It might not always be very deep, but it is enough to mess up your entire schedule. A quick downpour during work hours can trap cars in traffic for hours. You see people standing under canopies, waiting it out, because moving through the water just makes everything slower.

In Ikoyi, it is more patchy. One street is fine, the next is filled with water. Most times, it is the areas with ongoing construction that get hit the most. Sand, debris, and blocked drains leave nowhere for the water to go. So it just sits there, turning what should be a short drive into something longer than expected.

Go further down to Ajah, and the issue becomes more obvious. The area is growing fast, but the drainage has not caught up. When rain falls, major roads slow down almost immediately. You will see buses stopping earlier than usual, riders negotiating new drop-off points, and people walking longer distances just to get around flooded spots.

In Festac Town, the problem feels older. The layout still shows it was properly planned at some point, but the drainage does not work like it used to. After heavy rain, water stays longer than it should. Residents already know which streets will hold water and which ones are safer to pass.

A normal day can turn stressful just because the rain lasted a bit longer than expected.
