You’ve probably noticed this before without even thinking about it. The same 100k that feels small in one city can suddenly feel manageable somewhere else, even when you didn’t change how you spend. That difference is where you are.

Lagos is a high-traffic city, and everything around it affects your money. Places like Lekki, Yaba, Ikeja, Surulere, movement alone can take a good part of your budget. Transport is not cheap, food prices keep changing, and rent is already on another level. A lot of people are in Lagos because of corporate opportunities, so demand is high, and prices follow it. You really can’t compare the cost of transport, rent, food, and even lifestyle in Lagos to places like Uyo or Kano.

Abuja is not far from that reality. The lifestyle there is expensive in its own way. Rent in many areas feels similar to Lagos, and once you start moving around, eating, and handling daily life, 100k starts going down steadily. It may not feel as chaotic, but the cost is still high.

Port Harcourt also falls into that same category. It is active and business-driven, and once you are fully living there, money doesn’t sit for long. 100k can handle things, but not for as long as people outside might expect.

Now, when you move to places like Kano, Uyo, or Sokoto, it feels a bit different. Things are more affordable to an extent. Markets are cheaper, transport is easier, and daily living is not as demanding. In places like Sokoto, especially, you can hold 100k and actually feel like you have some breathing space instead of constantly adjusting your spending.

So the difference is not the money itself, it is the environment. Some cities are built in a way that makes you spend more money, while others allow it to stretch a bit.
