So one morning in a typical Lagos secondary school, the principal suddenly announces that an inspector from the Ministry of Education is coming to visit. Everybody panics. Teachers are adjusting their lesson notes, students are forced to sit up straight like mannequins, even the class captain is shouting “Sit well! Sit well!”

In one SS2 class, their English teacher, Mr. Okafor, decides to impress the inspector. He enters the class with unusual seriousness.

“Today,” he says, “we will do oral expression. I want each of you to come out and use a proverb in a sentence.”

Students begin to sweat. You know Nigerian proverbs—if you miss it, you’ve finished yourself.

First student comes out confidently:

“A rolling stone gathers no moss. For example, my uncle that travels a lot has no house.”

Teacher nods. “Good, next!”

Second student:

“The early bird catches the worm. That is why I wake up early to read.”

“Excellent,” teacher says.

Now it’s Musa’s turn. Musa is known for always having confidence without correct answer. He walks to the front like a motivational speaker.

He clears his throat:

“My proverb is… ‘A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.’”

Teacher smiles, expecting something sensible. “Go on.”

Musa continues:

“For example, my neighbor has one chicken in his hand, but there are two chickens inside the bush. So instead of chasing the two, he will just hold the one… because bush meat is stressful.”

The class starts laughing small.

Teacher frowns. “That’s not exactly the meaning—”

But Musa raises his hand, not done yet:

“And also, sir, if you enter bush in Nigeria, anything can happen. Snake, thief, even village people. So it’s better to hold the one you already have before wahala will come and carry you.”

At this point, even the inspector who just walked in at the back cannot hold his laughter.

Teacher sighs deeply. “Musa… you have turned proverb into survival strategy.”

Musa nods proudly:

“Sir, in this country, everything na survival strategy.”

Class erupts again.

Moral lesson: In Nigeria, interpretation depends on your environment… and your level of fear. 😄
