But three months later, at 2 a.m., as I rocked him through another sleepless night, I learned something that changed everything: the first five years of a child’s life build the foundation of who they become.

I used to think education started when a child put on a uniform and carried a backpack. I was wrong. It starts when they stare into your eyes and wait for you to respond. It starts when they hear your voice. It starts when they cry and someone answers.

When it was time to choose a preschool, I didn’t look at the biggest building. I looked at how the teachers spoke to the children. Did they kneel to their level? Did they listen? Were there books? Was there play?

Because I had learned something powerful: early years education is not about rushing children to write essays at three. It is about teaching them to think, to explore, to feel safe enough to try.

The first week of school, Tolu cried so hard my chest hurt. I cried in the car after dropping him off. Change is hard for mothers too.

But slowly, something beautiful happened.

He began to ask questions I had never taught him directly.

“Why is the moon following us?”

“Why does rain fall?”

“Why is that man sleeping outside?”

Curiosity. Confidence. Empathy.

These are not accidents. They are seeds planted early.

Now at four, he speaks clearly. He shares his toys. He tries again when puzzles are hard. When he falls, he says, “It’s okay, I’ll try.”

And every time he says that, I know the sleepless nights, the storytelling, the singing, the intentional conversations — they are shaping him.

Early years foundation is not just a school program. It is the quiet, daily decision to nurture a child’s mind and heart before the world labels them.

I am still learning. I still get tired. I still worry about money. But I have seen what early investment does.

It builds more than intelligence.

It builds security.

It builds resilience.

It builds a human being who believes they matter.

And that belief — formed long before the first official exam — may be the most important lesson of all.
