So one day, a young boy named Chinedu just resumed a new secondary school in Lagos. First day, fresh uniform, oversize sandals, hair shining with oil like say na mirror. The teacher, a very strict woman everybody fears, walks into the class and says:

“Today, we are doing English composition. I want each of you to make a sentence using the word ‘IMPORTANCE.’”

Students begin to write seriously like WAEC has come early. One girl stands up confidently:

“Ma, the importance of education is very high.”

Teacher nods. “Good.”

Another boy says:

“Ma, the importance of brushing your teeth every day cannot be overemphasized.”

Teacher smiles small. “Very good.”

Now it gets to Chinedu. This boy stands up with full confidence like he’s about to drop wisdom. He clears his throat:

“Ma, my papa was travelling to the village, so he carried yam, rice, goat meat, and plenty things…”

Teacher interrupts, already confused: “Where is the importance in that sentence?”

Chinedu continues without shaking:

“…and the bag was too small, so he said, ‘Chinedu, pack the remaining things IMPORTANCE.’”

The whole class goes silent for two seconds… then bursts into uncontrollable laughter. Even the quiet girl at the back is rolling on the floor.

Teacher is trying to hold her anger but her lips are shaking. “Chinedu! Come here! What do you think ‘importance’ means?!”

Chinedu looks genuinely surprised.

“Ma… e mean say something no fit enter again na… like ‘important’ means e no enter!”

At this point, even the teacher cannot hold it. She turns to the board, pretending to write, but she’s laughing quietly.

Moral lesson: In Nigeria, English is not just a language… it’s a battlefield. 😄
