I used to think it was a scam. How do you charge me money to see the ocean in Lagos? After all the traffic, after danfo stress, after the heat, I now get to the gate, and someone is telling me to pay before I even smell the water.

It did not sit right with me.

But the more I kept going to the beach, the more I started noticing something I did not want to admit at first. I was not really paying for the beach.

I was paying for what Lagos would have turned that beach into if nobody was in charge.

Because if we are being honest, if you remove the gate, remove the staff, remove the structure, that place will not feel like an escape anymore. It will just become another crowded Lagos spot. Noise everywhere, no space to sit, trash building up, people dragging for space. The same stress we were trying to run from will just follow us there.

And that is when it clicked for me.

The money is doing something. It is creating space where space normally does not exist in this city. It is buying a bit of order in a place that would naturally be chaotic. Someone is cleaning. Someone is controlling how many people come in. Someone is making sure you can actually sit down and hear yourself think.

But if I am being completely honest, that is still not the real reason I pay.

I pay because I need a break.

There are days in Lagos when everything feels like too much. The noise, the movement, the constant feeling that you have to be doing something or going somewhere. And then you get to the beach, you sit down, and for a moment, it slows. The waves do not rush you. Nobody is honking at you. You are just there.

That feeling is rare here.

So even though part of me still feels like it should be free, another part of me understands what I am actually paying for. It is not the water. It is not the sand.

It is that small window where Lagos loosens its grip on you.

And somehow, that is worth it.
