When I decided to get a cat in Nigeria, I thought the hardest part would be finding one. I was wrong. The real learning started after I brought my cat home.

If you’re considering adopting or buying a cat here, these are the things I genuinely wish someone had told me.

1️⃣ Not Everyone Likes Cats And Some People Truly Fear Them

This was my biggest shock.

In many parts of Nigeria, cats are still linked to superstition. I had neighbors who genuinely believed cats, especially black ones, were connected to witchcraft. Some people were uncomfortable. A few were openly hostile. Keep your cat indoors as much as possible. Don’t assume everyone in your compound will be welcoming. If your cat roams freely, you’re taking a risk.

I had to be intentional about protecting my cat. A simple collar with ID helped people see that it wasn’t a stray. I also made sure to calmly educate people when necessary instead of reacting emotionally.

Your cat’s safety depends a lot on you in this environment.

2️⃣ Vet Care Isn’t as Straightforward as You Think

Before getting a cat, I didn’t realize how important it was to identify a good vet early.

You’ll need:

• Vaccinations

• Deworming

• Flea and tick prevention

• Emergency access if something goes wrong

Not every area has a reliable veterinary clinic nearby. I had to ask other pet owners for recommendations and save a vet’s contact in advance. That’s something I should have done before bringing my cat home.

3️⃣ The Monthly Cost Adds Up

Food. Litter. Vet visits. Grooming.

It’s not outrageous, but it’s consistent. Quality cat food is important, especially to avoid health issues later. Litter is a recurring expense. And unexpected vet bills can catch you off guard.

If you’re budgeting tightly, plan properly before adopting.

4️⃣ Cats Are Not Low Maintenance

People say cats are independent. Yes, but they still need:

• Clean litter daily

• Fresh water

• Playtime

• Mental stimulation

• Grooming

If you leave them bored, they’ll scratch things, climb places they shouldn’t, or become withdrawn. I had to adjust my routine to make time for interaction.

5️⃣ Secure Your Space

I learned this the hard way.

Cats squeeze through small openings. They jump higher than you expect. They chew things you didn’t think were interesting.

Before adopting, I should have:

• Removed toxic plants

• Hidden electrical cords

• Secured windows and balconies

• Checked for tiny escape gaps

Cat-proofing your home is not optional.

6️⃣ Choose Your Source Carefully

I almost bought from a random online seller because the price looked attractive. I’m glad I didn’t.

Ask for:

• Vaccination records

• Videos, not just photos

• Clear health information

There are responsible breeders and pet shops in Lagos and other cities, but there are also people just trying to make quick money. Be patient.

7️⃣ The Emotional Reward Is Worth It

Despite the challenges, I don’t regret it.

My cat became calm companionship in a chaotic city. A small source of comfort, quiet presence and unexpected joy.
