While digging a pit (or soakaway/absorption pit) can help collect surface runoff, doing so in your compound without proper planning poses several serious risks:
Major Hazards & Dangers
​- Structural & Foundation Damage: If the pit is dug too close to buildings, water pooling inside can saturate the soil, leading to soil erosion, foundation shifting, or structural cracks in nearby walls.

​- Mosquito & Pest Breeding: Stagnant water collected in an open or unsealed pit creates an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes (increasing risks of malaria or dengue), as well as snakes, rodents, and other pests.

- ​Safety & Collapse Risks: An unguarded or improperly covered pit is a severe physical hazard for children, pets, and visitors who could fall in. Over time, the pit's unreinforced edges can also cave in.

​- Groundwater Contamination: If the pit is deep or near a shallow water table, dirty surface runoff carrying oil, waste, and chemical pollutants can seep directly into local groundwater or nearby well water.

- ​Soil Saturation & Flooding Escalation: In areas with clay soil or a high water table, the pit will quickly fill up during heavy rain and stop absorbing water, effectively becoming a permanent mud pool that makes overall compound drainage worse.
Safer Alternatives
​Instead of an unlined pit, consider gravel-filled French drains, properly engineered soakaway pits placed at least 3–5 meters away from structures, or channel drains that direct water out toward municipal storm gutters.
