Here's something I find really interesting:
You can sometimes react to a smell before you're even consciously aware of it.
Your nose is constantly detecting chemicals in the air and sending information to your brain. Most of this happens without you sitting there thinking, “Okay, let me analyse this smell.”
And your brain can connect certain smells with things you've experienced before.
That's why you might walk into a room and suddenly feel like something smells familiar, even though you can't immediately figure out what it is.
Your sense of smell is also closely linked with areas of the brain involved in memory and emotion.
So sometimes your brain can basically recognise something before you can put it into words.
You might just think:
“Something smells familiar…”
while your brain is already searching through its memory. 😂
It's one of those body functions that's happening quietly in the background all day.
Quick fact: Your sense of smell can detect and process information without you having to consciously pay attention to every smell around you.
