Your lungs don't actually have muscles that pull air into them.
So how does breathing even work? 😭
Your main breathing muscle is the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle underneath your lungs.
When you breathe in, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward. This increases the space inside your chest, causing the pressure inside your lungs to drop.
Air then moves into your lungs because air naturally moves from an area of higher pressure to an area of lower pressure.
When you breathe out normally, the diaphragm relaxes and moves back upward. The space in your chest becomes smaller, pressure inside the lungs rises, and air flows back out.
Your ribs and the muscles between them also help change the size of your chest during breathing.
So your lungs aren't really doing the pulling themselves.
They're more like the passengers...
while your chest and diaphragm are doing the driving. 😂🫁
And you've been doing this automatically since the moment you were born.
