Your ears aren't only for hearing.

Deep inside your inner ear is a part of the body called the vestibular system, and it helps your brain figure out things like whether your head is moving, tilting or turning.

It includes three tiny semicircular canals and two structures called the utricle and saccule.

The semicircular canals mainly detect rotational movements of your head.

The utricle and saccule help detect linear movement and changes in head position relative to gravity.

And your brain combines all of this information with signals from your eyes and muscles to help you keep your balance.

That's why you can close your eyes and still know that you've tilted your head.

Your ears are basically sending your brain information about movement without you even thinking about it.

Pretty wild when you realise that.

So technically, your ears aren't just helping you hear your favourite songs — they're also helping you stay upright. 😂

Did you already know your ears had a role in balance, or did you think they were just there for hearing?
