I’ve been trying to be more intentional about using sunscreen, and it made me realise that simply having sunscreen in your skincare routine isn’t the whole story.

How you apply it matters too.

Here are 5 things to keep in mind:

1. Use enough.
Ā  Ā A tiny amount spread over your whole face may not give you the level of protection stated on the product.

2. Don’t forget your neck.
Ā  Ā If your neck is exposed, it needs protection too.

3. Remember other exposed areas.
Ā  Ā Your ears, hands and other exposed parts of your skin can also receive a lot of sun exposure.

4. Apply it before going outdoors.
Ā  Ā Give the sunscreen time to form an even layer on your skin before prolonged sun exposure.

5. Reapply when needed.
Ā  Ā If you’re spending a lot of time outdoors, sweating heavily or swimming, sunscreen can wear off and may need to be reapplied.

And yes, having darker skin does NOT mean you don't need sunscreen.

Melanin offers some natural protection, but it doesn't make your skin completely protected from UV radiation.

One more thing: check the label of the sunscreen you’re using. Look for broad-spectrum protection and follow the product’s directions for application and reapplication.

I took this video of the Aqua sunscreen I currently have because it’s one of those products that can easily sit in your skincare routine without us stopping to ask:

ā€œAm I actually using it correctly?ā€

Be honest šŸ‘€

Do you apply sunscreen every day, only when you're going out, or you’re still trying to make it a habit?
