💊 YOU BOUGHT ZINC, BUT DO YOU ACTUALLY KNOW WHY YOU’RE TAKING IT?
I recently got these Biozink sachets, and it made me think about how common supplements have become.
Sometimes, you walk into a pharmacy, see a supplement recommended for “immunity,” skin, wounds or general wellness, and you just think, “Let me try it.”
But with supplements, knowing why you're taking them matters.
Zinc is an essential mineral. Your body needs it for several important processes, including normal immune function, wound healing, cell growth and making proteins and DNA.
But here's the part people sometimes miss:
More zinc doesn't automatically mean more health benefits.
Your body only needs a certain amount, and taking too much zinc over time can cause problems, including nausea and interference with copper absorption.
Also, symptoms like frequent sickness, hair changes or slow wound healing don't automatically mean you have a zinc deficiency. There can be many different causes.
So if you're considering a zinc supplement, don't just copy what your friend, neighbour or someone on social media is taking.
Check the label, know the amount you're getting, and if you're taking it because you suspect a deficiency or because of a health problem, it's better to speak with a healthcare professional.
And one more thing: supplements are not a replacement for a balanced diet.
I took this picture of the Biozink I got because I think we need to become more intentional about the supplements we put into our bodies.
Before you take that next supplement, ask yourself:
“What exactly am I taking this for?”
🇳🇬 Be honest, Nigerians: what's one supplement you see people recommending everywhere?
