A lot of people don’t talk about this enough, but if you’re planning to move to the UK as a student, who you come with can shape your entire experience.
When I was figuring things out, one thing became very clear. Going alone sounds like the best option, but financially, it can stretch you thin.
As a student, you’re limited. You can only work 20 hours a week, and even with a decent job, what comes in barely covers rent, bills, and school payments. You’re constantly calculating, adjusting, and trying to stay afloat.
Now compare that to coming with someone you’re building with.
Your partner, as a dependent, can work full-time. That changes everything. Suddenly, it’s not just about surviving anymore, you actually have breathing room. Rent feels lighter, school fees are less stressful, and you’re not stuck in a cycle of just getting by.
It’s the difference between managing life and actually having the capacity to grow.
But let’s be honest, this isn’t just a financial decision. It’s emotional too.
Moving countries will test any relationship. So this only makes sense if you’re with someone you genuinely see a future with. Not someone you’re unsure about, not someone you’re just “seeing”, but someone you’re ready to build life with.
Because yes, things can go left. People change. Situations change. That’s real.
But if you get it right, the upside is massive.
Some people who move alone spend years trying to recover financially after school. Others who came as a team were able to stabilize much faster and set themselves up early.
At the end of the day, it’s a personal call.
But if you already have the right person in your life, it might be worth thinking about doing it together.
Sometimes, the smartest move isn’t just relocating, it’s choosing not to do it alone.
