You leave home with your phone fully charged.
A few hours later, you’re outside, replying messages, checking Instagram, taking a few pictures, maybe using Google Maps to find somewhere.
Then you look at your battery.
42%.
You barely notice it at first.
Then you check again.
27%.
Now you’re wondering, “Wait, what have I been doing with my phone?”
Because some days, your battery seems to last almost the entire day. Other days, it disappears before you’ve even made it home.
So, what actually makes your phone battery drain faster?
It’s not always because your battery is bad.
Sometimes, your phone is simply working harder than you realise.
Your phone is too hot
Using your phone under direct sunlight, leaving it in a hot car, or doing heavy tasks while it is already warm can affect battery performance.
Lithium-ion batteries don't handle high temperatures well. Prolonged exposure to heat can also speed up battery ageing. Apple warns that temperatures above 35°C can permanently reduce battery lifespan.
Your screen is doing a lot
That bright screen you're using outdoors requires more power.
The brighter your display, the more energy your phone can use, which is why automatic or lower brightness can help conserve battery.
Your network is struggling
Ever noticed your battery dropping quickly when you're somewhere with terrible network?
Your phone may keep searching for or trying to maintain a connection when the signal is weak. Poor cellular coverage can therefore contribute to higher battery consumption.
You're doing something demanding
Gaming, GPS navigation, video streaming, using your camera for long periods, or turning on your hotspot can all use considerably more power than simply texting.
So if you've spent two hours watching videos, don't be surprised when your battery isn't where you left it.
And yes, cold can affect it too
Very cold temperatures can temporarily reduce battery performance. In extreme conditions, a phone can even shut down unexpectedly.
Once the battery warms back up, that temporary effect can improve.
So the next time your battery seems to be disappearing unusually fast, check more than the percentage.
Check the temperature.
Check your signal.
Check your screen brightness.
And check what you've been using your phone for.
Sometimes, your battery isn't suddenly bad.
Your phone is just working harder.
