Imagine you're walking somewhere and suddenly hear a loud noise behind you.
Before you've even figured out what happened, your heart is already going:
THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.
You haven't started running. You haven't even decided whether you should be scared yet.
So why is your heart acting like there's an emergency?
It's because your body has a built-in emergency response called the fight-or-flight response.
When your brain detects something it considers threatening, it can activate your sympathetic nervous system. This causes your body to release hormones such as adrenaline.
And adrenaline basically tells your body:

Your heart rate increases so your blood can be pumped around your body more quickly. Your breathing can become faster, your muscles become more alert, and your body shifts into a state where it's ready to respond.
The interesting part is that your body doesn't always wait for you to calmly think things through.
Sometimes it reacts first.
That's why you can get startled by something harmless and still feel your heart pounding afterward.
Your body doesn't know the difference between āactual dangerā and āmy friend jumping out from behind the door like an idiot.ā š
Once your brain realizes you're safe, that emergency response gradually settles down and your heart rate can return toward normal.
Quick medical fact: Fear can activate the sympathetic nervous system, which increases heart rate and prepares the body to respond quickly.
So the next time your heart starts racing because you got scared, don't immediately panic about the racing itself.
