Perhaps I am not remotely qualified to weigh in on this topic, but for some reason, I feel compelled to.
First and foremost, it’s important to note that the rise of the far right on X was the reason I left what—during the era of Jack Dorsey—used to be my favourite social media platform.
With that said, I feel at liberty to state that I totally agree, as strange as it might sound to some of my friends, with Elon Musk when he tweeted:
“If you have a womb, you are a woman. Otherwise, you are not.”
I came across the news on Fox News (trust me, social media has a way of showing you what you dislike), and I rushed to X to see the tweet for myself.
During the administration of Joe Biden, we witnessed the unfortunate rise of far-left ideologies, where children were encouraged to change their gender even though their prefrontal cortex has not yet fully developed. I often question why a child who is not allowed to vote, drink, or smoke is permitted— encouraged—to make a decision as consequential as changing their sex.
At the very least, this is worrying. I also believe that the fixation around this kind of 'liberty' played a significant role in why the Democrats lost the November 4 election last year.
I genuinely do not care if an adult chooses to change their gender. However, arguing that you are not a woman despite having a womb, or not a man despite being born with a male genitalia, is—at least to me—problematic. It also undermines the core principles of liberalism, which I strongly believe in.
Elon Musk may not be my ideal kind of person, but on this point, he is definitely right.
