One of the most popular places I usually go to for foodstuffs is the vibrant World Bank Market. The first time I walked into the market, I immediately noticed how lively the environment was. I was thinking it would be a kind of supermarket. But no, it was like a normal market, like Douglas market in Owerri. Traders were calling out to customers, fresh vegetables were displayed on wooden tables, and the smell of roasted corn and spices filled the air. It felt like a typical Nigerian market where you can actually get fresh local foodstuffs, but the pricing is a little bit higher.

Inside the market, I could find almost everything needed for cooking. From fresh tomatoes, pepper, onions, and vegetables to yams, beans, rice, plantain, and even live chicken. The market mainly serves residents around the World Bank Housing Estate and nearby areas, so many people prefer buying their daily food items there instead of traveling far into the city. It is located at F2J2+PR9, Northern Middle Tangent Arterial Highway, New Owerri. Opens daily from 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM.

Another place I enjoy visiting when I want a quieter and more organized shopping experience is the Everyday Supermarket Emporium 5. Walking into the supermarket feels very different from the open market. Everything is neatly arranged on shelves, from packaged food, beverages, and canned goods to household items. Sometimes when I don’t feel like entering the busy market, this is where I quickly pick up things like bread, milk, noodles, or frozen foods.

There are also smaller neighborhood stores around the estate, like Chidos Supermarket and Kingsway Supermarket. These places are very convenient for quick shopping, especially in the evening when you just need a few items for dinner.
