The first time I went there was because someone told me that pepper is cheaper there than in many other markets in the city. I decided to check it myself.

When I got there, I immediately understood why people recommend it.

The market is full of traders selling fresh pepper, tomatoes, onions, and other soup ingredients in bulk. Many of the sellers bring their produce from the northern part of Nigeria, which is why prices are often lower compared to smaller neighborhood markets.  

Another interesting thing about Akinyele is that it’s not just a pepper market. You’ll also find live animals like goats, cows, and chickens, which is why many people go there when they’re preparing for parties, restaurants, or even festive periods.  

If you’re buying for a big household or an event, this is one of those places where you can buy in baskets, bags, or bulk quantities.

How to Get to Akinyele Market

Akinyele Market is located along Oyo Road, just after Moniya when you’re leaving Ibadan toward Oyo town.  

Directions:

 • From Iwo Road or Ojoo, take a bus going toward Moniya or Oyo.

 • Once you pass Moniya, tell the driver you’re going to Akinyele Market or Shasha Market.

 • The market is along the main road, and you’ll start seeing trucks, pepper sellers, and livestock traders before the bus even stops.

It’s usually very busy in the morning, so going early in the day gives you better prices and fresher produce.

If you live in Ibadan and you buy foodstuff often, Akinyele is one of those markets worth knowing.
