Not everyone claps for you when you grow. Some people are only comfortable with you as long as you stay in the same place they left you - and the moment you evolve, level up, or start winning, the energy shifts.
I found this out the hard way. As I grew in my career, my faith, my personal life I noticed some friendships quietly changed. the excitement i'd shown for their wins wasn't matched when it was my turn to celebrate something good. Over time, I lost a number of friends this way, and at first it stung, but eventually I realized something important: I didn't need that kind of energy around me, even while I continued to genuinely celebrate theirs.
A few truths I have come to accept:
- Growth exposes who was really rooting for you. Some people love you at your starting point, not your becoming.
- Discomfort with your growth is information, not your problem to fix. Their silence or distance says more about them than it does about you.
- You can celebrate other without needing the same energy back. Genuine support isn't transactional but you're still allowed to notice when it's one-sided.
- Losing certain friendships isn't failure. Sometimes it's just outgrowing spaces that were never built to hold your next season.
If people can't celebrate your wins, that's not a reason to shrink, it's a reason to keep growing anyway, with the right people around you.
Has growth ever cost you a friendship you didn't expect to lose?
