A lot of students enter university thinking one course will automatically guarantee success, money, respect, and a soft life after graduation… only to realize reality is very different.

Some courses are hyped by parents. Some are hyped by society. Some are hyped because of status. And some people are studying certain courses not because they love them — but because Nigerians will say:

“Wow, that course is prestigious.”

But after 4–6 years… ASUU strikes… Project stress… Departmental fees… Carryover fear… And graduation…

Many people still end up confused, unemployed, frustrated, or switching careers completely.

Meanwhile, someone studying a “less respected” course is already making money online, building skills, freelancing, running a business, or working remotely.

So the real question is:

Is any course truly overrated… Or are students just entering university with unrealistic expectations?

Because nowadays:

Some engineering graduates are learning tech after school.

Some law students no longer want to practice law.

Some accounting students hate accounting.

Some people in computer science still cannot code.

And some graduates are succeeding in fields completely unrelated to what they studied.

University is important, yes. But in 2026, skills, consistency, connections, and adaptability matter more than course prestige alone.
