Some subjects take more time because the ideas are new or because earlier topics were not properly understood.

The first step is to identify exactly what is confusing.

Instead of saying, "I don't understand this course," ask, "Which part don't I understand?"

It could be a formula, definition, concept, calculation or even a word used by the lecturer.

Once the problem is clear, look for another explanation.

A student can ask a lecturer, course mate or academic adviser for help. Online videos, textbooks and educational websites can also provide different explanations.

Teaching the topic to someone else is another useful test. If you cannot explain it in simple terms, you may need to study it again.

Students should also avoid waiting until examination week before asking for help. The longer a misunderstanding continues, the harder it may become to understand later topics built on it.

In Nigerian universities, where students may have many courses in one semester, ignoring one difficult course can quickly create pressure near examinations.
