I’ve spent enough time in both Abuja and Lagos to know this: they drain your wallet in very different ways. People always ask which one is more expensive, but the honest answer is it depends on how you live.
In Lagos, housing is where the pain starts. Rent on the island can humble you quickly, and even on the mainland, prices keep climbing. Add service charges, fuel for generators, and random repairs, and you start wondering what exactly you’re paying for. Abuja rent can also be expensive, especially in places like Maitama, Asokoro, or Wuse II, but for the same price you often get more space and better planning.
Transportation is another big difference. Lagos traffic costs money. You might not notice it at first, but daily Ubers, fuel, and time spent in traffic add up fast. In Abuja, roads are better and movement is easier. You spend less time stuck, which also means you spend less money moving around.
Food is where Lagos feels slightly cheaper. There are endless options, from roadside food to local joints that won’t empty your pocket. Abuja food can be surprisingly expensive, especially eating out. Groceries and restaurant meals tend to cost more, and options are fewer.
Utilities are a mixed bag. Both cities struggle with power, but Lagos residents often spend more on fuel and alternative power because of density and longer outages. Abuja has more stable power in some areas, but once you add water, security, and estate fees, the difference balances out.
Social life is another silent expense. Lagos constantly gives you reasons to step out. Events, parties, pop-ups, weddings, concerts. Abuja is calmer. Fewer distractions, fewer impulse spends. If you’re trying to save, Abuja makes it easier to stay disciplined.
So which one is cheaper? Lagos is cheaper if you’re flexible, patient, and okay with stress. Abuja is more expensive upfront, but more predictable and less chaotic in the long run.
At the end of the day, cost of living isn’t just about money. It’s about what you’re willing to tolerate.
