For years, I threw pineapple peels straight into the bin.

Then I discovered tepache, a traditional Mexican drink made by fermenting pineapple peels with water, brown sugar, and spices like cinnamon.

At first, I thought it sounded strange. But after reading about it, I realized people have been making it for generations, not just because it tastes good, but because it’s packed with nutritional benefits.

Here are a few reasons tepache has become so popular:

-It supports gut health

Tepache is naturally fermented, which means it contains beneficial bacteria that help keep your gut healthy and support digestion.

-It contains bromelain

Pineapple is rich in bromelain, a natural enzyme that helps your body digest protein more efficiently and may reduce inflammation.

-It’s rich in antioxidants

Pineapple provides vitamin C and antioxidants that help strengthen your immune system and protect your cells from damage.

-It can be a healthier alternative to sugary drinks

Instead of reaching for another soft drink, many people enjoy tepache because it’s lightly fizzy, refreshing, and made from real ingredients.

-It reduces food waste

One of my favourite things about tepache is that it gives pineapple peels a second life instead of sending them to the bin.

How to Make Tepache

All you need is:

-Pineapple peels
-Water
-Brown sugar
-A cinnamon stick (optional)
-Fresh ginger (optional)

Mix everything in a clean glass jar, cover with a cloth, and leave it at room temperature for 2 to 4 days. Once it smells fruity and slightly tangy, strain it and chill before drinking.

It’s amazing that something most of us consider waste can become a refreshing drink with so many benefits.
