First, stop panicking.

You don't need to have your entire life figured out at 23, 27, 30 or even 40.

Sometimes you simply need your next step, not a ten-year plan.

Start by asking yourself what is actually making you confused.

Do you genuinely not know what you want?

Or do you know what you want, but you're scared you won't be good enough to get it?

Those are two very different problems.

Look at what you naturally keep coming back to.

What do you enjoy learning about?

What kind of problems do people come to you to solve?

What kind of work can hold your attention without you constantly checking the time?

Then look at your current reality.

What skills do you already have?

What can you afford to learn?

What responsibilities do you currently have?

You may have to take a practical job while you figure out your long-term direction. That doesn't mean you've failed.

And please stop expecting clarity to arrive before you start.

Sometimes you discover what you want by trying things.

Take the course.

Volunteer.

Start the small business.

Apply for the job.

Talk to someone already doing the work.

Try something for three months and evaluate it.

You are allowed to change your mind.

The career you choose at 21 doesn't have to be the career you die with.

But don't spend five years doing absolutely nothing because you're waiting for the perfect answer.

Pick a direction.

Take the next reasonable step.

Learn.

Adjust.

Try again.

You don't need to know exactly where your life is going.

You just need to stop standing still because you don't know the whole route.
