It’s always wild to me how tribal lines suddenly get very serious when love enters the chat. One minute it’s “we’re all Nigerians,” the next it’s “not that tribe.”

That video of a dad upset over a Yoruba boyfriend isn’t shocking—it’s familiar. Many of us grew up with parents who quietly (or loudly) had lists of who was acceptable and who wasn’t.

What gets me is the gap: older generations protecting culture the only way they know how, and younger people just trying to choose who they love.

We’re dating across tribes in the same cities, speaking the same slang, sharing the same struggles—yet these old boundaries still show up at home. It’s messy, personal, and very Nigerian.
