One of the biggest mistakes I see small business owners make is assuming that once they launch, customers will somehow find them.

They won’t.

Whether you sell clothes, cakes, gadgets, skincare products, or offer services, you have to put your business where your customers already spend their time.

These are some of the places I’d focus on if I were starting today.

1. WhatsApp

A lot of Nigerian businesses get their first sales through WhatsApp.

Post updates on your Status regularly, join relevant groups (without spamming), and encourage happy customers to refer you.

2. Facebook Groups

There are active Facebook communities for almost every niche.

Join groups where your ideal customers already hang out and focus on answering questions and being helpful before promoting your business.

3. Instagram

If your product is visual, Instagram is still one of the best places to build trust.

Show behind-the-scenes content, customer reviews, and short videos of your products in use.

4. TikTok

Some businesses have gone viral simply by showing how they package orders, solve customer problems, or share quick tips related to their niche.

People buy from businesses they feel connected to.

5. Feedcover Ads

If your target audience is Nigerians looking for practical information, running ads on Feedcover can put your business in front of people actively discovering new products, services, and recommendations.

6. Yournotify Lead Generation

If you’re struggling to build an email list, Yournotify’s Lead Generation feature can help you collect the contact details of people who are genuinely interested in your business.

Instead of relying only on social media algorithms, you can build your own audience and stay in touch through email campaigns and newsletters.

7. Google Business Profile

If you have a physical location, create a Google Business Profile.

Many people search things like “cake vendor near me” or “phone repair in Ikeja.” Showing up in those searches can bring in customers without paying for ads.

8. Referrals

Never underestimate word of mouth.

Ask satisfied customers to recommend your business to friends and family. A happy customer is often your best salesperson.

Finding customers isn’t about being everywhere. It’s about consistently showing up where your ideal customers already spend their time.

I’d rather market my business on three platforms consistently than create accounts on ten platforms and abandon them after a few weeks.

If you own a business in Nigeria, where have most of your customers come from? Share your experience. It might help another entrepreneur find their next customer.
