If you’re visiting Nigeria for the first time, I wouldn’t advise you to have dishes like jollof rice or fried rice. These are meals you can easily get abroad. Instead, these are the local delicacies I would recommend:

1.Asun

If you enjoy spicy food, don’t leave without trying asun. It’s smoky, peppery goat meat that’s usually served at parties and lounges. Just be prepared…it’s really spicy 🥵

2.Ofada Rice & Ayamase

This isn’t your regular rice. The local Ofada rice has a distinct aroma, and the green pepper sauce (ayamase) is rich, spicy, and unforgettable.

3.Kilishi

Think of it as Nigeria’s version of beef jerky, but with far more flavour. It’s perfect if you want something to snack on while travelling.

4.Banga Soup

If you’re visiting the South-South, this palm fruit soup is a must. The flavour is completely different from most soups you’ll find elsewhere.

5.Fisherman Soup

Packed with fresh seafood and spices, it’s one of those meals that makes you understand why coastal states are proud of their cuisine.

6.Abacha (African Salad)

One of the most underrated Nigerian dishes. It’s light, flavourful, and unlike any salad you’ve probably had before.

7.White Soup (Ofe Nsala)

Made without palm oil, this soup has a smooth, delicate taste that’s especially popular in southeastern Nigeria.

8.Tuwo Shinkafa & Miyan Kuka

If you’re travelling in Northern Nigeria, don’t miss this combination. It’s one of the region’s signature meals.

9.Ukwa (African Breadfruit)

Not every Nigerian has even tried ukwa, but when it’s cooked properly, it’s incredibly satisfying.

8.Peppered Snails

This is one of my favourite things to order when I’m out with friends. Tender, spicy, and perfect as a starter.

One thing I would say is don’t judge Nigerian food by what hotels serve.

Ask locals where they eat. Some of the best meals you’ll ever have will come from neighbourhood restaurants, roadside grills, and family-owned spots.

If a tourist had time to try only ONE Nigerian dish before flying home, what would you recommend?
