The "Detox Tea" Conversation I Have Too Often
A patient once proudly told me about a 7-day "detox tea" plan she'd just finished, expecting me to be impressed.
Instead, I had to gently explain something many people never hear:
Your liver and kidneys are already detoxifying your body every single day.
They don't stop working until you drink a special tea.
The truth is that most "detox teas" have very little scientific evidence showing they remove toxins from the body. In some cases, they simply act as laxatives or diuretics, making you lose water rather than toxins.
So what actually supports your body's natural detoxification system?
- 💧 Staying well hydrated
- 🍎 Eating fiber-rich fruits and vegetables
- 🫐 Getting antioxidants from whole foods
- 🥗 Maintaining a balanced diet
- 🏃 Exercising regularly
- 😴 Getting enough sleep
Whole fruits provide fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that genuinely support overall health—without the false promises of a quick fix.
My patient was a little disappointed at first, but she was also relieved. She realized she'd spent good money chasing something her body was already doing for free.
That's one of the reasons I wrote Eat to Heal: Fruits as Medicine.
The goal isn't to shame anyone for trying health trends. It's to replace myths with practical, evidence-based information that actually helps people make healthier choices.
