I had already accepted that the brown stains around my bathroom drain and tap were permanent.

I scrubbed with detergent. I tried bleach. I even bought one expensive bathroom cleaner that barely made a difference.

Then my mum told me to try something she has been using for years.

Lemon and salt.

I honestly didn’t expect much, but I was surprised by the result.

Here’s what I did:

✅ Sprinkle a generous amount of salt directly on the rust stain.

✅ Cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice over the salt until it’s well soaked.

✅ Leave it for about 20 to 30 minutes.

✅ Use the lemon itself or a soft sponge to scrub the area.

✅ Rinse with clean water.

For older stains, I repeated the process one more time.

Why it works

The acid in lemon helps loosen rust deposits, while the salt acts as a gentle abrasive that helps lift the stain without being as harsh as some cleaning powders.

A few things I learned

* It worked much better on surface rust than on stains that had been there for years.
* If your fittings are coated or delicate, test a small hidden area first.
* Drying your taps and metal fixtures after use really does reduce future rust stains, especially if you live in an area with hard water.

One thing I noticed from reading other people’s experiences is that some Nigerians prefer vinegar and baking soda, while others swear by lemon and salt because the ingredients are already sitting in the kitchen.

I still keep a commercial cleaner for stubborn stains, but for regular bathroom maintenance, this simple trick has saved me time and money more than once.
