When I saw the new NYSC reforms, my first reaction was:
“These actually sound promising… if they’re implemented properly.”
Here are the changes that stood out to me:
1. More Skills, Less Waiting
I like the idea of NYSC focusing more on practical skills, entrepreneurship, and career development. If corps members leave with certifications or skills that actually improve their chances of getting a job, that’s a big win.
2. Six Weeks in Camp?
This is the one everyone is talking about.
Personally, I don’t mind a longer orientation camp if those extra weeks are spent learning useful skills instead of doing more drills and marching under the sun.
3. Better Job Placements
Another change I like is the plan to match corps members to places of primary assignment based more closely on their qualifications and skills. That could make the service year much more meaningful.
4. Security Matters
Considering the security concerns we’ve seen in recent years, any effort to make deployments safer is a step in the right direction.
So, What Do I Think?
The ideas are good. The real question is whether they’ll be implemented the way they’re being presented.
Because at the end of the day, graduates don’t just need a longer NYSC. They need a service year that genuinely prepares them for life after school.
What’s your take on the new NYSC reforms? Which change are you most excited about, and which one are you skeptical of?
