If you’ve ever been in Awka during the Imo Awka festival, you’ll agree with me that is quite an interesting celebration.

To be honest, during Imo Awka, I try as much as possible to limit my movement. During this period, there are masquerades parading the streets with long canes. If you’re a man and you see any of these masquerades approaching, you either run away or give them some money so they don’t flog you. These masquerades are actually ruthless so I’ll advise you stay as as far away from them as possible.

The masquerades don’t flog women.

Beyond the cultural displays, the festival is also a social gathering. People return home from different cities just to be part of it. Friends reconnect, families host visitors, and the whole town becomes lively for days.

If you’re visiting Awka during the festival period, it’s a good opportunity to experience the town’s culture up close, watch traditional performances, and see a side of Awka that many outsiders rarely get to witness.

The festival usually happens in July and it lasts for a week.

The main festival happens in the Saturday of that week and it usually involves major masquerade displays and cultural performances.
