A friend of mine visited Lagos for the first time recently, and I offered to show her around.

To my surprise, she already knew most of the routes, where the major markets were, and even how long it would take us to get from one place to another.

I had to ask, “Have you been here before?”

She laughed and said, “No, I just use Google Maps… but probably not the way most people do.”

She showed me a feature I’d never really paid attention to.

Here’s how to use Google Maps to understand a new city before you even step outside:

1. Search for the place you want to visit, whether it’s a restaurant, hotel, market, or tourist attraction.

2. Tap Directions.

3. Google Maps will show you different ways to get there, whether by car, public transport, walking, or ride-hailing. You’ll also see alternative routes, estimated travel times, and, for public transport, where to board and where to stop.

If you’re exploring a city you’ve never been to, this can help you get familiar with the area before your trip even begins.

The video above shows exactly how to use the feature.

That said, Google Maps isn’t perfect. A local will always know the shortcuts, traffic patterns, and little details that an app can’t tell you. If you have someone who knows the city, that’s still your best guide.

But if you’re on your own, this feature can make navigating a new city a lot less intimidating.

Was I the only one who just discovered this, or have you been using it all along?
