For the longest time, I believed what many Nigerians believe:
“If you don’t know someone, don’t even bother applying.”

Then I started paying attention to people who were actually getting jobs.
Did some of them have connections? Yes.
But many didn’t. They simply approached their job search differently.
Here are a few lessons I picked up.

1. Apply Early
Many companies start reviewing applications long before the deadline.
If you wait until the last day, there’s a good chance your application will be buried under hundreds of others.

2. Tailor Your CV
Sending the same CV to every employer rarely works.
Highlight the skills and experience that match the specific role you’re applying for.
A few small changes can make a big difference.

3. Build a Portfolio
If you’re a designer, writer, developer, marketer, photographer, or work in any creative or technical field, let employers see your work.
Sometimes a strong portfolio speaks louder than a CV.

4. Use LinkedIn Properly
Don’t just click “Easy Apply.”
Connect with recruiters, engage with industry professionals, and keep your profile updated.
I’ve seen people land interviews simply because a recruiter found their profile.

5. Tell People You’re Job Hunting
This isn’t the same as asking for “connection.”
Many opportunities come because someone remembered you when a vacancy opened up.
Friends, former colleagues, lecturers, and classmates can all point you in the right direction.

6. Apply Beyond the Big Companies
Everyone wants to work for the biggest brands.
That also means they’re receiving thousands of applications.
Smaller companies and startups often have fewer applicants and can offer valuable experience.

7. Keep Learning
Adding an in-demand skill or certification can make you stand out.
Free and affordable courses are available online, and many employers value practical skills as much as degrees.

8.Attend networking events:
This is how people actually build the connections that get them jobs.

A connection might help you hear about an opportunity but your skills, preparation, and persistence are usually what help you keep the job.

The market is tough, and there’s no magic formula. But giving up before applying guarantees you’ll never get the opportunity.

If you’ve gotten a job in Nigeria without knowing anyone at the company, what do you think made the biggest difference? Share your experience. It might help someone who’s currently job hunting.
