Short answer: Yes.

Real answer: Not for most people.

A lot of Nigerians treat betting like a side hustle. For some people it’s their major source of income. To be fair, there are people who have made good money from betting. But here’s the part nobody likes to talk about.

For every betting slip you see someone post online, there are dozens of losing tickets you never get to see. Betting is designed around probability, not certainty.

The betting platforms are businesses. Their goal is to make money over the long term. Yours is to beat the odds. That’s not impossible, but it’s much harder than you think.

The biggest mistake people make is treating betting like a reliable source of income.

A side hustle should ideally:
🔸 Have a degree of control
🔸 Allow you to improve with skill
🔸 Produce somewhat predictable results

With betting, even the most researched prediction can go wrong because of one red card, one injury, one missed penalty, or one unexpected result.

That’s why many people who depend on betting for income often find themselves trapped in a cycle of:
🔸 Chasing losses
🔸 Increasing stakes
🔸 Taking bigger risks
🔸 Losing more money

If you choose to bet, it may be wiser to see it as entertainment rather than a business. The money you stake should be money you can afford to lose, not money meant for rent, food, transport, or school fees.

Personally, I don’t think betting qualifies as a sustainable side hustle for most Nigerians.

A skill, service, business, or investment usually offers a better path to long-term income because you’re creating value rather than relying on outcomes you can’t control.

What do you think?

Can betting realistically be called a side hustle, or is it simply gambling with the hope of making money?
