With Chike's support and guidance, Ada registered for the JAMB examination and began to prepare rigorously. She spent countless hours studying, pouring over textbooks and past exam questions, often late into the night, driven by the hope that this might be her ticket to a better future. Her determination and hard work paid off when the results were released, and Ada had scored exceptionally high, earning her a place at one of the most prestigious universities in eastern Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The news brought a glimmer of hope to Ada's life, but the journey was far from over. Her excitement was short-lived, as the reality of her financial situation soon set in. University admission was just the first step; the financial burden of tuition, books, and living expenses still loomed large. With hope, Ada shared the news with her family. Her parents beamed with joy, while her siblings congratulated her with warm hugs. Her sister was happy by her success but knew they couldn't afford to support her education without extended hands.

As the days passed, the prospect of Ada attending university seemed to be slipping away once again. With no substantial means of supporting herself through university, Ada's anxiety grew. She worried about how she would pay for tuition, accommodation, and living expenses. Her parents, though willing to help, were struggling to make ends meet themselves. For this reason, Ada seemed to gradually loose hope of attending the university and pursuing her dream.

During this same time, the ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) went on a long strike. This gave Ada a space to work for money. It was during this tumultuous period that Ada met Chief Okeke, a wealthy businessman in his middle 60s. Ada went to the town looking for where she could work as a salesgirl for a short period so she could save up some money. That is how Ada entered Chief Okeke's office in that faithful day. Chief Okeke, after interrogating Ada, took keen interest in her education and offered to sponsor her throughout university. 

"Adaobi, my dear," Chief Okeke began, his voice kind and fatherly, "I've heard all you have said and your desire to further your education. You are a bright young girl with a promising future ahead of you."

Ada's heart raced with excitement and apprehension. Could this be the answer to her prayers?

Chief Okeke continued, "I would like to offer you my support. I am willing to sponsor your education, cover all your expenses, and ensure that you have everything you need to succeed in university. However, there is one condition."

Ada's excitement was replaced by a sense of foreboding. "What is the condition, Chief?" she asked cautiously.

Chief Okeke looked at her with a solemn expression. "You must become my girlfriend. In return, I will take care of all your needs. Although, I am married with children, I need a young girl like you by my side. Just accept to be my girlfriend and I will make sure you lack nothing."

Ada was torn and felt a wave of shock and disbelief wash over her. This was the opportunity she had been praying for, but the condition attached to it clashed with her values and beliefs, and therefore uncomfortable with her. She had always valued her integrity and independence, and the thought of compromising her values for financial gain was unsettling. She couldn't fathom compromising her integrity for the sake of financial assistance, irrespective of how much she needs it. She couldn't imagine why a man with family and in such his age could only desire to help someone on such a condition.

Torn between her dreams and her principles, Ada spent several sleepless nights wrestling with the decision. As she grappled with this difficult decision, Ada's thoughts were filled with uncertainties. Would she accept Chief Okeke's offer and enjoy his support and assistance, yet risk losing herself in the process, or would she decline and risk struggling through university without financial support? She thought of seeking advice from her family and friends, but ultimately, it was a choice she had to make on her own.

As the deadline for Chief Okeke's offer drew near, Ada knew she had to make a final decision. In the end, Ada decided to decline Chief Okeke's offer. With a heavy heart, she thanked him for his generosity but explained that she couldn't accept his condition. She chose to uphold her values, even if it meant facing a difficult and uncertain future.

Ada's decision marked the beginning of a challenging journey. Fortunately for her, her sister's husband paid for her tuition and accommodation fees, and all the expenses for the start, as she moved to UNIZIK to start her university journey. As time progressed, she experienced limited financial assistance, taking on available part-time jobs to make ends meet. She often went without meals and struggled to keep up with her studies, but her determination and resilience never wavered.

As she navigated the hardships of university life, Ada's story became a testament to the strength of the human spirit and power of unwavering principles. Her journey had just begun, and the challenges ahead would test her resolve in ways she could never have imagined.
