DAY 1 (August 1)
World Breastfeeding Week Begins: Breastfeeding Is More Than Nutrition—It's Global Health
"Breastfeeding is not simply about feeding a baby. It is one of the most powerful public health interventions ever discovered."
Today marks the beginning of World Breastfeeding Week, celebrated globally from August 1–7.
When people think about breastfeeding, many only see a mother feeding her child.
As dietitians and healthcare professionals, we see something much bigger.
We see an intervention that:
✔ Reduces infant mortality.
✔ Strengthens immunity.
✔ Improves cognitive development.
✔ Protects maternal health.
✔ Reduces healthcare costs.
✔ Contributes to environmental sustainability.
According to global estimates, optimal breastfeeding could prevent hundreds of thousands of child deaths every year while improving long-term health outcomes.
Yet millions of infants worldwide still do not receive exclusive breastfeeding during their first six months of life.
The challenge isn't simply knowledge.
It's maternity leave policies.
Workplace support.
Social norms.
Access to skilled lactation counselling.
Economic inequality.
Healthcare systems.
Breastfeeding is everyone's responsibility—not only a mother's.
As dietitians, researchers, clinicians, employers, educators, governments, and communities, we all have a role to play.
This week, I'll be sharing evidence-based insights on breastfeeding—from nutrition and public health to maternal wellbeing, workplace support, and policy.
Together, let's build a world where every mother receives the support she deserves.
What do you think is the greatest barrier to successful breastfeeding in your country?
I'd love to hear perspectives from around the world.
